Article Index - Architecture
A large contributing factor to the appeal of Highlands is the
unique character of the neighbourhood's architecture. Largely
populated by historical homes & commercial building in varying
architectural styles the buildings tell a story about design
& construction in the early 20th centrury.
There are many examples of period revival architecture, where
architects and builders looked to the past for inspiration and
historical interpretations of European styles began to emmerge.
These styles include Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Collegiate
Gothic.
Simultaneous to the rise of period-style architecture, the
modern era saw its beginnings with architects who were instead
looking to the future, not the past, with more progressive,
modernist styles. Thus defines the eclectic movement of the
early 20th century, which consisted of a simultaneous and perhaps
competing interest in both modern and historic architectural
traditions. These styles includes Craftsman (bungalows and Four
Squares), Art Deco and Queen Anne.
HHF members have captured photos and completed research on
many homes and commercial buildings in the area including several
historically designated resources. The links below are profile
articles which have appeared in previous volumes of the Highlands
Historical Foundation Newsletter and have been digitized for
