shim shim Humphrey's Residence The Highland's Barber

continued from page 1

The Highland's Barber Shop was initially located at 6419-112 Avenue. Right beside his shop was Jamison's Cafe, run by Spence and Betty Jamison. In the rear of Bill's shop was Paula's Beauty Salon. Next door was Highland Hardware operated by Herb Horn and Jack Agnew's Drug Store. Also located on the bustling business strip were Calahan's Dress Shop, Dave Ingram's Real Estate Company, The Highland Bakery operated by Florent Lepin, Pete's Meat and Grocery, an empty lot, Owen Cornish Dentist, Mary McGreevey's Beauty Salon, Al Davison's Cycle Shop, John's Shoe Repair, The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Trudeau Dry Cleaners.

It was about a year later, on a stormy spring day with very few customers, that Bill began to think about buying a house for his growing family, by this time he and his wife already had their first son Patrick. Bill wandered next door to see Dave Ingram at Ingram Realty to make his wishes known.

A couple of hours later Dave took him over to the Humphrey's Residence at 11142-62 Street, a nice 2 and a half story home. Dave and Karen Brookes were renting the suite upstairs and Morely Brown, the church caretaker was renting the basement suite. In 1965, older homes like this house weren't very popular due to their age and the asking price was only $17, 000.00.

Bill was interested in the house but unfortunately, didnt even have a hundred dollars for a down payment. Dave and Bill walked to the bank across the street where Bill borrowed $3000.00 for the down payment. Dave then took Bill to Canada Permit to get a mortgage for the remaining $14, 000.00. In a matter of hours, Bill accomplished his goal, which actually worked out even better than he expected. After collecting the rent and paying the expenses, Bill was only out of pocket about $15.00 a month where he had been paying $40.00 per month for the basement suite. The Humphrey's Residence remained the Saurette family home for years.
